Media in the online age

Digital technology - Literally any technology which involves computers.

Digital convergence - Is the coming together of previously separate industries thanks to digital technology.

What gets you marks in A-level media studies?:

Media language first and foremost is the most essential area of the subject.

Textual analysis.

Having an opinion, and turning that opinion into a clear argument. EG: Michael on online media.

Social media, online media and digitally convergent media have become more powerful than governments.

Never being subject to traditional forms of regulation, Online Media presents a literally impossible to understand, hyperreal collage of news, fake news, ideology, hatred, advertising, pornography and videos of cats.

There is no differentiation between these forms, leading to a form of hyper-convergence with no hope of differentiating between previously distinct forms of media.

With no impediment to posting, extreme ideologies such as holocaust denial, pro-eating disorders, rape threats and images of abuse can be shared with relative impunity.

And yet, the internet can potentially collect all human knowledge, can allow the sharing of artistic endeavours.

How does media language combine to create meaning?

Strong amount of direct address with the usage of informal language to come off as 'down to earth.' as relatable to the preferred viewer.

fast-paced editing to appeal to a younger online audience. Usage of frequent jump cuts prevents silence and promotes an energetic atmosphere to the text.

Natural cool high key lighting, set in a studio, a blank background with possibly fake plants to create a comforting and homely feeling.

Fixed single camera set-up.

Interactive features- subscribing and liking, she asks if you are a 'new subscriber' and to comment.

'homemade' feel, through clothing, lighting, sound and setting despite likely being shot in a studio.

The usage of that jump cuts at the start with the bleep sound effect is an attempt to appear as if the media product is uncoordinated/ not planned. Despite the fact that it clearly is.
