Black Panther fact file
Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Ryan Coogler.
PRODUCTION:
- The film was majorly filmed within Atlanta, Georgia in the US, though due to it's utopian African setting, aerial shots from Uganda, South Africa and Zambia were used. Other filming took place in Argentina; Lastly, the film's car chase scenes were shot in Butan, South Korea.
OWNERSHIP:
"Relating to characters onscreen is necessary not merely for us to feel seen and understood, but also for others who need to see and understand us. When it doesn’t happen, we are all the poorer for it.'"
- Jamil Smith, Time Magazine on Black Panther
- Look at most high budget mainstream media films and they will be featuring a white protagonist, with a white cast often taking up a majority of the central cast, - This leaves the minority communities with a lack of true representation within the film industry, thus when Black Panther came out, the black community seemingly took ownership of the film even before it's release, proud as to the way in which their culture was portrayed.
ADVERTISING AND MARKETING:
- 1. Creating Black Panther in itself was a major risk for Marvel, considering films produced around the time prior to it's release based around diversity had come out relatively mixed, with 'Wonder Woman' coming off as a hit, while the all-female Ghostbusters reboot bombed at the box-office and failed financially. - This risk paid off entirely with Marvel's decision to break the mold using a film that broke their formula in a few crucial ways; Kevin Feige (Marvel creative executive producer) deciding to use a relatively new black director as well as cast, topping this off with a futuristic African setting- This was a major leap for the franchise that had mostly been taking place in USA with majorly white prominent casts/ protagonists.
- 2. Coinciding with the release of Black Panther, Marvel looked to further use Black prominent figures within their marketing, with a new soundtrack album for the film being featured by the artist Kendrick Lamar actually being released prior to the film itself getting 1st place in the top 200 music billboard the week of it's debut, as well as a fresh comic run for the Black Panther character by African-American author/ artist. - The film's Superbowl advertisement was created by a female Shauna Williams, with the advertising agency being founded by a black creator, Aaron Walton.
- 3. Early on, in pre-production, Feige was already planting seeds in an interview over the film via the Empire magazine speaking of it's necessity within the pre-existing Avengers franchise as a 'stepping stone', this is said to have helped create an early excitement to the film with some much needed anticipation. - When the trailer for the movie came out at Comic-Con in 2017 the hall was filled with a rare standing applause.
- 4. The first teaser trailed for Black Panther was revealed upon the airing of the NBA finals, this is significant not only due to the audience of NBA hitting a peak of 20.1 million viewers in 2017 but also reportedly because 63% of the viewership is made up of African-American males.
DIRECTOR AND ACTORS:
- Ryan Coogler - The first Black as well as the youngest director within the MCU films, previously having done work with actor Michael B. Jordan on the Rocky successor film franchise 'Creed'.
- Chadwick Boseman - The actor portraying the protagonist of the film, T'challa, having played the Black Panther character since the prior film Captain America: Civil War when he was first introduced.
- Michael B. Jordan - Extremely critically-acclaimed for his performance within the film as one of the MCU's most compelling villains.
